The Institute for Optical Science and Air Force Office of Scientific Research co-organized the 1st Joint DOD-IOS Workshop held at The Ohio State University on July 9 and 10, 2024.

The workshop was well-attended with 42 participants, 16 of whom were Federal employees.

The topic for this year's workshop was Extreme Light: an area that has garnished much attention and investment over the last two decades. This growth has been marked by several milestones including two Nobel Physics prizes, the emergence of attosecond pulses, the proliferation of PW laser systems, and advances in intense X-ray accelerator-based light sources. Equally important is the investment by several US federal agencies in the construction and operation of mid-scale facilities focused on the frontiers of extreme light.

The workshop was anchored by plenary talks given by the directors of National Mid-Scale Facilities and DoD laboratories. The workshop included invited talks from Academic/AFRL researchers and Federal Program Managers presented topics relevant to their programs. The workshop also featured lively panel discussions!

The objective of this workshop and future workshops is to open dialogue between researchers and sponsors.
